If you’re looking for a bite to eat, don’t stop at just any greasy spoon restaurant. There are lots of restaurants to choose from, but not all of them are good. The classic American diner is a favorite of many, and for good reason. Here’s a list of the best diners in Orangeburg, South Carolina.4 crispy chicken wings close up on black plate

Fatz Southern Kitchen Cafe

This unassuming restaurant located on Saint Matthews Road has been serving up Southern-inspired fare for over 30 years. What once began at a converted peach stand is now an institution in Orangeburg.

Fatz Southern Kitchen made their name with their signature dish, Calabash Chicken. Calabash is a style of seasoning and cooking named after the nearby fishing town of Calabash. Fatz uses fresh chicken tenderloins soaked in a buttermilk brine for 24 hours, breaded in their secret recipe, and flash-fried to a golden brown.

They do great wings, too, and offer them in six different flavors: buffalo (hot or mild), Southern gold, Kentucky bourbon, peach whiskey barbecue, dry rub, and Nashville hot.

They have other great Southern-style appetizers, too, such as fried green tomatoes, Aunt Sue’s deviled eggs, and Calabash pickle skewers.

The menu includes classic sandwiches done with a Southern twist, baby back ribs, seafood of all sorts they can lay their hands on, and their free signature poppy seed rolls, baked fresh all day.

Mama’s Kountry Kooking

Where else but in Orangeburg, South Carolina, can you spell “country cooking” with a K? Well, Mama’s Kountry Kooking isn’t kookie at all. It’s slap-your-grandma good!

Located on US Highway 301, they serve breakfast from 6:30 to 11 a.m. and lunch until 2:00 p.m. Their classic Southern diner menu has won Best of the Best lunch for five years in a row.

Come check out their special lunch items, such as fried chicken livers or gizzards, hamburger steak with onions and gravy, and the fried pork chop. Get any meat and choose two vegetables from the list, including black-eyed peas, turnip greens, and corn on the cob.

In addition to traditional sandwiches, the restaurant features a specialty burger called Mama’s Hungry Man’s Burger. This monster is a pile of cheese, jalapeno peppers, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise, all stacked on top of a half-pound ground beef patty.

D&B Fried Fish and Barbecue

Located on Russel Street in Orangeburg, D&B’s has been serving up fresh fish and barbecue for years. If it’s classic Southern fare you’re craving in an unassuming eatery, D&B’s is the place to go.

The menu includes a wide variety of fried fish, such as tilapia, whiting, flounder, catfish, brim, croaker, and just about anything they can source locally. They also serve up a mean fried chicken and fried pork chops, and their ribs are fall-off-the bone famous. Pair them all with classic Southern sides, such as hush puppies, coleslaw, and mac and cheese, or get some fries or potato salad.

The next time you’re craving some great food, check out one of these diners for Southern-style home cooking at its finest.
