The Columbia Museum of Art

The Columbia Museum of Art boasts an internationally renowned collection of art, along with traveling shows and exhibitions that you’ll only find at this location. Throughout the museum’s 26 galleries, you can view art that spans more than 5,000 years of global history. Its mission is to celebrate outstanding artistic creativity through its programs, exhibits, and art collection, allowing visitors to engage their minds and enrich their spirits. It’s open every day but Monday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Beginning in late June, the “Black is Beautiful: The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite” exhibit will open and run through September. This exhibit features the work of Brathwaite, a photographer who used his work to represent the slogan “black is beautiful” in the 1950s and 1960s. His pieces reflect a creative collective that was produced in an attempt to dramatically change the narrative during the Civil Rights Movement and associated challenges. In February 2021, the museum will also feature an exhibit with works from M.C. Escher, an artist well-known for his unique and imaginative designs.   street art columbia

The Art Center

If you’re interested in creating art, check out the Art Center, hosted by the city’s Parks and Recreation department. At the Art Center, adults and children can take part in various workshops and classes to create their own pieces and learn more about the process of making art. The center has hosted pottery, mixed media, and other specialty classes and workshops for participants.

Two of the unique programs at this location, Creative Journey and Community Outreach, help to provide access to art to other populations throughout the Columbia community. Creative Journey provides resources and classes to those in the Wounded Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Jackson. For younger children, the annual Spring Break Art Camp is a popular event, available to those between the ages of five and 12. The art camp provides classes and materials for children to make their own art pieces.

Trustus

Theater is a major aspect of a city’s culture, and Columbia residents and visitors can experience a live performance at Trustus Theatre. The professional theater company behind the location brings new and entertaining shows to this intimate theater. Some of the previous thought-provoking and enlightening productions have included Black Super Hero Magic Mama, Rock of Ages, and Grey Gardens. Upcoming performances at the Trustus Theatre include Miss Bennet, Christmas at Pemberly, and Company, the 1971 Tony Award winner for Best Musical.

Make a plan to visit some of these destinations in Columbia to experience all the city has to offer in terms of art and culture. You can enjoy a fascinating and insightful day out, whether you’re exploring a museum or strolling through an art gallery.
