Dec 8, 2016

New Year’s Eve is typically a night when people around the globe gather together and reminisce about the good, bad, and in-between events of the past year. Fortunately, if you live in Orangeburg, there are several ways you can say farewell to 2016 and greet 2017 with a welcoming smile.

Applebee’s

If you’d like to celebrate the start of 2017 in a familiar setting, the Applebee’s on Chestnut Street may be a great place to do it. Although information about celebrations for this year hasn’t been published yet, this chain restaurant has had special events for New Year’s Eve in the past. It’s worth contacting them this year to get the scoop.

The University of South Carolina Alumni Center

Feeling up for a black-tie gathering that’s for a good cause? Head less than an hour down the road to Columbia and go to the Women of Hope Presents New Year’s Eve Gala. Taking place at the University of South Carolina Alumni Center, this bash gives you a great excuse to get gussied up and socialize with your friends or make some new ones. Everything kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and goes until 1 a.m., so expect a full evening of festivities. All proceeds from the event benefit the Lexington Medical Center Foundation, which is dedicated to delivering high-quality, affordable health care for the area’s residents.

If you’re not in the mood to serve as a designated driver on the night of the party, don’t worry. Your ticket allows you to get a discounted room rate at the Hilton Columbia Center, Hyatt Place Columbia/Downtown, and Hampton Inn-Vista. Details about hotel discounts are included within your event confirmation e-mail.

Downtown Columbia

The historic downtown district of Columbia is a definite hotspot for end-of-the-year celebrations in 2016. Make your way to the Famously Hot New Year event and enjoy tunes from the likes of Trombone Shorty, Orleans Avenue, and Sister Hazel. This free extravaganza regularly attracts people from all over the country, so you’ll not only mingle with partygoers from Orangeburg and other parts of South Carolina but with some other locations too.

In 2015, the Famously Hot New Year lived up to its name and attracted more than 35,000 attendees. With that in mind, you’ll want to make plans early. Don’t delay booking a hotel room if you’re staying in the area for the night.

Charleston’s Marion Square

If you don’t mind taking a trip outside of Orangeburg and driving for a little over an hour, consider going to Marion Square in Charleston. There, you’ll find another free celebration to enjoy. The main difference with this one, though, is that it’s alcohol-free, and has a family-oriented atmosphere — although there’s still plenty for adults to do. The festivities start at 4 p.m. and go until 10:30 p.m., making it a good option if you’d rather avoid the crowds and be home by midnight to watch the ball drop on TV.

Now you have several ways to get 2017 started right, whether you’d rather just stay in town or go on a jaunt to a nearby destination. Happy partying!
