Columbia, South Carolina has a flourishing downtown area that will keep you entertained day after day. No matter where your interests lie, you will find an activity or attraction that appeals to you. Come with us as we check out some of downtown Columbia, SC!

Soda City

Soda City is Columbia’s street market and it is filled with local artisans, food stands, farmer’s produce, ethnic foods, and much more. It is open every Saturday, regardless of the weather, and is a fantastic way to spend a weekend in downtown. What started as a farmer’s market has morphed into a fair-like experience with music, vendors, and entertainment. Be sure to arrive hungry because authentic food is impossible to pass up!

Riverbanks Zoo & Garden

This well-maintained, humane zoo is one of the best in the country. Even if you’re not a fan of zoos in general, this one gets high marks because of its animal conservation policies and its educational approach toward animal captivity. The enclosures are large, which allow for more than adequate animal movement and the grounds are clean and spacious. There are many activities for visitors of all ages, and you can even feed the animals at designated times during the day.

Craft Axe Throwing

Sometimes, you just need to let a little frustration out and Craft Axe Throwing lets you do that in a very fun way. In specially designed throwing lanes, visitors grab an axe and throw it at a painted target on a wooden wall. Of course, an instructor provides tips on how best to handle the axe so that no one gets hurt, but once you’ve learned the rules, you’re on your own for an hour or two.

You can practice hitting the bullseye or play a game similar to darts with a friend. When you’re done, adults can grab a craft alcoholic beverage at the bar, but remember to drink responsibly and never drink and drive.

South Carolina State Museum

South Carolina’s rich history is on display at the South Carolina State Museum located on Gervais St. in downtown Columbia. You will discover furniture, telescopes, transportation, clothing and more from the 1700s through the 1900s.

There is even a newer exhibit that chronicles the U.S. space race, which has been a hit with visitors. Consider purchasing the Sherlock Holmes exhibit addition for an even more interactive museum experience that involves solving clues and puzzles as you explore the museum.

Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum

Another museum that is a must-see in downtown Columbia is the Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum. South Carolina has an interesting past having been a city that was burned to the ground during the Civil War, and this museum documents it all. Civil War weapons, uniforms, and military drawings are all on display, along with a 3D movie that details Columbia’s Confederate history.

Downtown Columbia is a bustling area that is filled with fun things to do. The five activities listed here should get you started as you explore the area, but if you are looking for even more amazing things to do in downtown, just drop by Superior Kia for additional recommendations.
