During the winter months, it can be tempting to stay indoors. But if you have free time, you could also take the opportunity to seek out inspiration, broaden your horizons, and learn something new. Here’s our pick of the best museums to visit on a rainy day in Orangeburg, SC.

1. IP Stanbeck Museum and Planetarium

Located on the campus of the State University of South Carolina right here in Orangeburg itself, the IP Stanbeck Museum features fascinating collections of African artifacts, historical photographs, and art collections, including the work of Andy Warhol. The planetarium is housed in a 40-foot dome where you can watch the movement of the planets shown by special effects and automation projectors and view the museum’s collection of meteor fragments.

2. Elloree Heritage Museum and Cultural Center

A showcase of life as it has been through the ages in this area, this museum is situated on Cleveland Street in Elloree. You’ll have the opportunity to walk along an early-1900s recreation of Cleveland Street and explore a plantation gin house. There are group and self-guided tours available, as well as the opportunity to meet Ruby Doo the mule.

You can also learn from archaeological discoveries about the lives of Native Americans who lived along the Santee River. This is a great chance for a family adventure, so use the seven seats in your roomy Kia to load up the kids and their friends for a day of learning that’ll just feel like fun.

3. Branchville Railroad Museum

The Railroad Museum stands on Freedom Road in Branchville, on the site of the world’s first split-rail junction. As part of the longest railroad route in 1833, Branchville became a key location in the rail network. The museum houses a replica of “The Best Friend of Charleston,” a steam locomotive that traveled the 136-mile route from Charleston to Hamburg and was destroyed in a fatal explosion. Visitors can also view a wide selection of railroad artifacts.

4. The SC Military Museum

Fans of military history should take a trip to National Guard Road in Columbia to visit the SC Military Museum. There’s a collection of weapons that dates back to the 1600s and the largest collection of cannons in the Midlands. There’s also a variety of wheeled and tracked military vehicles and exhibits of equipment and uniforms. A visit here will let you discover stories from the armed forces and conflicts throughout history.

While the weather’s less friendly, a visit to the museum could be just the thing to turn a dull day into an exciting one, and you’ll have the chance to enjoy your driving experience too. But don’t forget to stop by and see us at Superior Kia and check out our wide range of new and used vehicles to find the best car to take you on your next voyage of discovery.
