If you live near Orangeburg, South Carolina, you are fortunate to live in one of the premier outdoor areas of the United States. The region is known for its hunting parks and open policies, and dog-friendly attractions are easy to find.

Edisto Memorial Gardens

Located in the city limits of Orangeburg, just four blocks from the city center on US Highway 301, the Edisto Memorial Gardens is a can’t miss attraction for pets and owners alike. Visitors come from all over the country to view over 57 varieties of roses. The Horne Wetland Park, with its 2,600 foot boardwalk, is the crown jewel of the gardens. The main path follows the Edisto River, one of the longest blackwater rivers in the United States.

The gardens are open seven days a week, from sun up to sun down. For viewing schedules and the best time to visit to see certain blooms, visit the website. From Thanksgiving week through New Year’s Day, the Gardens are lit seven days a week with its annual holiday display. There is a half-mile trail for adults and a shorter Kids Walk for the little ones. Dogs are welcome in the gardens as long as they are leashed and picked up after.

Southern Paws Pet Lodge

Your pooch will have plenty of others to socialize with while their humans are on vacation or away for business at Southern Paws Pet Lodge, a full-service boarding and grooming facility located on North Road in Orangeburg. The dog park is located on the Southern Paws Pet Lodge campus, and is currently open for free to current boarding and grooming clients to visit during the day. Amenities include a pond, shaded areas, drinking water, lighting, and restrooms. Official hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but its best to call ahead at 803-531-9554. Just be aware the park does require proof of current vaccinations before admission since the lodge also serves as a boarding facility.

Southern Paws also rents out the park for parties and events, so if you know an avid pet owner or are one yourself, consider booking the space for a child or pet’s celebration.

Aiken State Park

You and your dog will benefit from the fresh air and natural scenery during a day at Aiken State Park where fishing and canoeing are popular pastimes. The park is located along the Edisto River, about 30 minutes west of Orangeburg. The website offers robust family itineraries if you’re looking to get away for the weekend with your pet in tow.

Admission to the park is $2 for adults, $1.25 for seniors, and is free for ages 15 or younger. General hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. Pets are allowed in most areas outdoors, as long as they are well-behaved, and on a leash that is 6 feet in length or shorter.
